BuildBreathe™ Breathable Floor Protection – Durable Surface Guard for Construction & Finishing

Kae Hwa’s BuildBreathe™ Floor Protection Covering is a high-performance temporary shield designed to protect sensitive flooring surfaces during construction, renovation, and finishing phases. By laminating a liquid-resistant membrane with a high-strength nonwoven fabric, this technical covering provides a robust barrier against spills, dirt, and mechanical wear. Unlike standard plastic sheets, BuildBreathe™ ensures essential breathability, allowing moisture and gases from newly installed floors to escape, preventing discoloration and curing issues.

BuildBreathe™ Breathable Floor Protection

Temporary Surface Protection with Moisture-Vapor Management

BuildBreathe™ Breathable Floor Protection Covering

BuildBreathe™ Breathable Floor Protection is designed as a temporary covering for finished flooring during construction, renovation, installation, and finishing phases.

By combining a functional breathable membrane with a protective nonwoven layer, the material helps reduce direct exposure to liquid spills, dirt, dust, foot traffic, and general construction wear while preserving a pathway for moisture-vapor transmission.

Unlike fully non-breathable plastic coverings, BuildBreathe™ helps reduce the risk of moisture becoming trapped beneath temporary floor protection, supporting more appropriate moisture management for sensitive flooring systems.

Core Advantages

Liquid Resistance Helps reduce direct contact between finished flooring and accidental water, paint drops, cleaning liquids, and other common construction spills.
Moisture-Vapor Management Provides a moisture-vapor transmission pathway that helps reduce the risk of prolonged moisture retention beneath temporary floor coverings.
Surface Protection The nonwoven surface provides a softer contact layer that helps reduce abrasion from dust, foot traffic, and light construction activity.
Slip-Resistant Surface Options Surface texture can be engineered to improve walking stability during construction. Actual slip performance depends on test conditions and surface status.
Temporary Installation Can be used as a temporary covering with seam-based fixing methods, reducing the need for full-surface adhesive contact with finished flooring.
Custom Composite Design Membrane formulation, nonwoven substrate, basis weight, width, surface texture, and composite structure can be adjusted according to project requirements.

Why Does Temporary Floor Protection Need to Breathe?

Finished flooring may still contain residual moisture, or may be installed over adhesives, mortars, concrete substrates, or other materials that continue to dry or cure after installation.

When a fully non-breathable plastic sheet is placed over a floor for an extended period, moisture vapor may accumulate between the covering and the flooring surface. The actual impact depends on the flooring system, initial moisture content, indoor temperature and humidity, ventilation, and covering duration.

Blocks Surface Spills Helps reduce direct contact between liquid spills and finished flooring.
Allows Moisture-Vapor Transmission Maintains a pathway for moisture vapor to move through the protective covering.
Reduces Moisture Retention Risk Helps reduce prolonged moisture accumulation beneath temporary floor coverings.

Flooring should always reach the curing, drying, or covering conditions specified by the flooring, adhesive, mortar, or substrate supplier before temporary protection is installed.

Core Principle

"Protect the finished surface while preserving a pathway for moisture-vapor transmission."

Breathable Protection vs. Non-Breathable Plastic Covering

Both systems can provide temporary surface coverage, but their behavior toward moisture vapor beneath the floor covering is fundamentally different.

Application Fit

Construction Sites Temporary protection for finished floors exposed to continued foot traffic, dust, tools, and general finishing work.
Material Handling Helps protect flooring along material transport routes from dust, rolling equipment, and general construction wear.
Painting & Finishing Provides temporary surface coverage during painting, wall finishing, carpentry, fixture installation, and cleaning work.
Renovation & Handover Helps maintain finished flooring condition during final inspection, cleaning, equipment installation, and project handover.

Construction Options

2-Layer

Nonwoven surface + breathable functional membrane

A streamlined structure designed for temporary surface protection, liquid resistance, and moisture-vapor transmission.
3-Layer

Nonwoven surface + breathable functional membrane + protective backing

Adds an additional backing layer for greater composite stability and surface performance according to project requirements.
Heavy-Load Areas

Use additional rigid protection where required

For heavy equipment, scaffolding, concentrated point loads, or high-risk tool work, rigid protection boards or load-distribution panels should be added according to jobsite conditions.

Precision Composite Manufacturing

±0.01 mm Film Thickness Control Precision cast-film extrusion helps reduce performance variation caused by uneven film thickness and improves consistency in vapor transmission and liquid resistance.
Controlled Lamination Precision adhesive application, solvent-free lamination, and other suitable composite processes can be selected according to the target material structure.
Custom Material Architecture Nonwoven type, membrane formulation, basis weight, width, texture, printing, and composite configuration can be adjusted for different flooring and construction requirements.

Temporary Installation Considerations

Confirm Floor Readiness

Confirm that the flooring, adhesive, mortar, coating, or substrate has reached the curing or covering conditions specified by the material supplier.

Use Compatible Tape

When seam fixing is required, use tape compatible with the flooring surface and perform a small-area test before full installation.

Keep the Surface Clean

Remove loose debris, standing water, oil, and excessive dust from both the floor and covering surface to improve walking stability and prevent abrasive particles from becoming trapped underneath.

Add Rigid Protection for Heavy Loads

Breathable floor protection is a temporary surface-protection layer and should not replace rigid load-distribution boards in areas exposed to heavy equipment or concentrated loads.

Build a Reliable Temporary Protection Layer for Finished Floors

BuildBreathe™ Breathable Floor Protection combines a functional membrane with nonwoven materials to provide liquid resistance, surface protection, and moisture-vapor transmission during construction and finishing phases.

Kae Hwa Industrial provides customizable membrane formulations, nonwoven substrates, basis weights, widths, printing, surface textures, and 2-layer or 3-layer composite structures for building-material brands, construction-material suppliers, and converting partners.

Protect the finished surface while preserving a pathway for moisture-vapor management.

FAQ

Newly installed floors, especially wood and concrete, release moisture as they cure. Non-breathable covers trap this moisture, causing wood to warp or concrete to develop efflorescence (white powdering). BuildBreathe™ allows these vapors to escape while keeping liquid spills out.

The nonwoven layer serves two roles: it provides a soft, non-abrasive contact surface for the floor and acts as a mechanical buffer to absorb impacts from tools and foot traffic, preventing scratches and dents.

Yes. Our lamination technology produces a highly tear-resistant composite. We can customize the GSM (weight) of the nonwoven and the thickness of the film to meet the specific durability requirements of heavy-duty commercial construction.
